My Studio Space

OCAS Studio STITCH

Using a very cool program on Windows Live Photo Gallery, I was able to stitch this photo together. This is my art studio. I get lots of light, I have lots of flat space to spread out everywhere, and I have lots of art books. During the summer, I clean it up a bit and run children’s art classes through OC Art Studios here. This space is my favorite space in the whole house. Sometimes, I wish the doorway to enter it worked much like the wardrobe door from “The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe” so that I could enter the room, close the door, and paint for hours and then exit the studio with no time passing at all. Yes, as a stay at home mother of three, that would be my fantasy.

I was inspired to do this drawing for a friend after looking at some fantasy illustrations in the Spectrum catalog.

Illustrator Talk at the OC Kids Book Festival

Last years Children’s Book Festival, held at the campus of Orange Coast College, was lots of fun. Every year there are some really great authors and illustrators who come out to sign books and meet the readers. I was happy to do a book signing next to Mr. Dan Santat, awesome illustrator extraordinaire. Here’s a clip of a little interview I did with People Jar where I talk about being an artist.

Modigliani Self Portrait

It’s the beginning of Spring, which means it’s time for me to begin preparing for the summer…. I am a born procrastinator, so I typically don’t prepare for anything until the day before. However, I’m learning all kinds of ways to make my life less hectic, and one of those lovely tricks is to plan ahead. So, I begin planning for the summer NOW… more specifically, I’m preparing for my summer children’s art classes now.
One of my many favorite artists is Amedeo Modigliani. Modigliani’s work is easy to spot because his portraits of people usually consist of elongated oval shaped heads, giraffe lengthed necks, simplified features and mask-like eyes. He’s a great artist to introduce to children because of these exaggerated elements. So, I’ve done a self portrait A La Modigliani that I will use as a sample of artwork to show my students when we begin the summer classes. I used oil pastels rather than oil paint because of their ease of use.

Summer Family Film Festival Artwork

Here’s the artwork I did for the Orange Public Library Foundation’s Summer Family Film Festival. The theme for this years reading program is “One World, Many Stories.” The featured film’s will be “Tangled”, “How To Train Your Dragon”, “Shrek”, “Mega Mind”, “Legends of the Guardians”, “Toy Story 3”, and “Despicable Me.” I tried to incorporate some images from those movies in the poster.
