I've been continually working on this personal project of mine --- it all started when I dragged out a dusty notebook that I kept of my children's memories. I looked back on all the journal logs I wrote about playdates, funny sayings and milestones that my kids experienced, it seemed like they needed to be brought to life.

This spawned the idea of creating a book of illustrations much like the ones above and below. Each illustration will have two images: one set in reality and one set in the imaginative mind of the child.

More to come!!! Let me know what you think? Can you relate to the below image?

How does an artist go from an idea to a finished painting?

It's a bit of a process that I thought I'd outline in this post.

First off, I will usually draw what's called a Thumbnail Sketch, rightly named because they are small (like your thumbnail). The reason to start out with a thumbnail sketch is to visually plan your idea out with not a lot of pencil mileage or detail. This way, if the idea isn't working, you don't have to feel like you've wasted your time, you can scrap the drawing and start on another drawing for the same idea.

In my thumbnails I usually work out the best POV or Point of View that my drawing will be seen. I like to do interesting perspective shots since I find those fun and challenging, as well as a lot more interesting to look at. This means that I will rough in some perspective guidelines to assist with the layout of the scene.

<img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvvToJBUHrx8_V7CE4kqL9yGlPRZk258bnTs2oeddLH1dPLypG5x5wXPIODHpE_wYlzT5PxPgB_FeRj_eiuKYo7RieckP18ONyUMlAkMfK_E9jtHE0NlEIibB59ImiNSXeL1m_vw/s320/Bathtime+Process+thumbnail+2+rough+perspective.jpg" title="Rough perspective.... ewww too many lines!

In the above drawings are my rough perspective lines and my tight perspective lines. It's absolutely key to get the perspective guidelines accurate at this stage before continuing so that there are no errors down the road. I've completed a few paintings without taking the time at this key step and found myself fighting with my improperly drawn guidelines throughout the process. It's not fun to have come so far in the process of a painting only to realize that your perspective is off. Learn Perspective. It's boring and tedious, but it's your friend in the long run.

Once I'm done with the serious business of orthogonals and horizon lines and vanishing points, I get to start tightening the key elements of the drawing. I'll construct my characters with 3 Dimensional shapes to make sure they are properly laid out in the world I've imagined for them, then I add their details. When I'm happy with that, I move on to the additional elements in the scene. It was fun adding all the clothes and mess around the bathroom floor in this scene. Two little kids really do make a big mess, even when you're trying to clean them.

Next, I'll do a tonal value sketch on top of my drawing and then do a few color comps to see what kind of color palette I want to use. Once I'm happy with that, then it's the best part... the details. Rendering.

I ended up cropping the image to get the narrow feeling of being constrained in a bathroom with these characters. I kept the image brightly lit and made the highest area of contrast around the main character -- the exhausted mother.
I made this cute little family caricature for my friend's 50th birthday celebration. It was so much fun to do. What's great about this is that they can use their individual caricatures as avatars or photo i.d.'s for social media or other websites that ask for a bio photo. The image was printed as an 8x10 but it could easily be printed as large as 18 x 24 inches.

This would make a great unique holiday gift for mom, dad, grandmom, grandfather or brothers and sisters. Along with the print, you would get a high-resolution image file to use and share.
Here's some drawings I did in class today at LCAD. We discussed triangulation of shapes and exaggeration. I'll admit that these are not as exaggerated as they could be but I did allow myself to play with the forms a bit more. I encouraged my students to push the boundaries on their drawings, stopping them midway in the process and asking them to pause and figure out what element they could push even further in their drawings. Our model, Patricia Lackey, is a graceful professional model and she did a wonderful job of playing the role of muse for my students today.OC Art Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846914894172734989noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-11732753274182983862015-09-13T12:17:00.001-07:002015-09-13T12:17:32.297-07:00Silhouette Exercise - How to see Shapes in the Figure

I teach a Figure Drawing for Animators class part time at Laguna College of Art + Design. I love teaching there. The classes are small, the students are talented and the school is beautiful.

Below is a sample of our Week 2 exercises observing shape as part of the gesture. Animators need to be able to see the complex figure as a series of interesting shapes. Theses shapes should create a clear and readable silhouette so the character's emotions and actions are clearly readable on the screen.

These 5 minute exercises assist with building that skill set.

Ideally, the artist should be designing the look of the drawing based on the idea that they are communicating what they want to show the viewer. Personality, attitude and action should be clearly visible and not confusing. The more attitude and personality in a drawing, the more appeal it has.

I asked my students to look for triangular shapes in the figure that they could build into the gesture. By thinking of these shapes, they can start manipulating those shapes into more interesting relationships with the rest of the figure. For instance, looking at the lower leg and boot as a long triangle, you can elongate it and narrow the top point for a more exaggerated drawing.

Along with teaching private lessons and summer school art classes, I’ve been doing my best to spend my time wisely by producing some artwork. I started doing these cute versions of fan art back in January and even exhibited some of the work with the Popzilla Guys at the Anaheim Rothick Art Haus in May.
I originally did a concept sketch of this painting and submitted it for a large scale mural as part of a “Pop-Up” Gallery in L.A. years ago (the Manifest Equality Exhibit). I didn’t get to do the mural, but I thought that the idea was a good one and should definitely be created… when I had the time…

Well…

Recently, I was moved to complete it after visiting my mothers gravesite during Mother’s Day. My mother was a Baha’i. A very deeply and devoted Baha’i. She lived her life full of love for every soul she met. One of the principles of the Baha'i Faith is the Oneness of Mankind. Growing up in a Baha'i family, my mother and father were always surrounding my sister and I in a community filled with the most diverse of peoples. Since the Baha'i Faith is a world religion, people from all countries of the world were represented in our little community in Santa Ana. Diversity is something I am so at ease with because it is what I came to expect in the world around me.

So, as I was leaving my mothers gravesite, I was in a bit of an alpha state… I tend to leave the cemetery with a profound feeling of sadness, love and connection to the universe all at once. It’s a very hard feeling to describe. The image of the Unity sketch came to my mind suddenly and strongly.

The next thought was: I needed to complete it.

So. I did.

And here it is.

Please enjoy it. Share it with those who would appreciate it.

My wish is that it makes its way around the world and back!

Go with Love!

Larissa
Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-152814812793313862014-05-11T22:36:00.001-07:002014-05-11T22:36:52.607-07:00Visit with the Principal
For this illustration I started with a pencil sketch of a large “s” curve. I challenged myself to make something out of that “S” curve. If you’ve ever played a “doodle” game with someone where one person draws a squiggle and the other person is challenged to make a picture out of that squiggle, then you are familiar with my process. The difference is, I play this game by myself. It’s fun and pushes me to think spontaneously. You can see the difference between the original pencil sketch and the *nearly* finished piece. Let me know what you think!

Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-79524424276472203002014-04-27T16:39:00.001-07:002014-04-27T16:39:41.195-07:00Example of a Portfolio for my Figure Drawing for Animators class
Since I’ve been teaching a Figure Drawing for Animators class at Laguna College of Art + Design for the last few years, I thought it was finally time to put together an official sample of what I look for in my students portfolio.

With finals coming up in the next few weeks, I know that my students are stressed beyond belief: completing their animated sequences, finishing their character and BG layouts, rigging their characters, etc…. For my figure drawing class, I’d like to think that most of the work has already been done in the blood, sweat and tears that they pour into each 6 hour studio session.

Below you’ll find a few examples of what I like to see in a Final Portfolio. Since we focus heavily on gesture drawings done within 1 – 5 minutes long, most of the drawings in the portfolio should be comprised of such.

We also spend a lot of time learning construction and anatomy as well as spending time during the last half of the semester drawing a costumed figure.

Things to keep in mind when selecting drawings for your portfolio:

Drawings should have a clear silhouette.

Drawings should convey a sense of movement

Drawings are not stiff, but are fluid and have rhythmic lines.

Drawings have a sense of 3 dimensional depth on the page.

A successful drawing would ideally contain the following elements:

Efficient use of line that conveys Rhythm, Form, and knowledge of Anatomy.

<img title="1 min gestures" style="border-top: 0px; The pose on the left is drawn from observation and done in 15 minutes. The pose on the right is drawn from observing the same pose, but from the imagined perspective of 180 degrees from the original position. In other words, students need to draw the model as though they were standing behind the model, on the other side of the room. This is great practice for utilizing all the required skills necessary in animation.

I will be posting more sample pages from our Exaggerated Character class that is coming up next week. Should be fun!
Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-11895518254780912792014-03-24T19:43:00.001-07:002014-03-24T19:43:15.674-07:00Latest Work
Here’s some art I’ve been working on lately.

<img title="Elephants Final Version4" style="border-top: 0px; To other cute little dogs, she is apparently not so sweet. Nor are they so sweet to her. This is for my Figure Drawing for Animators class at LCAD. Over their spring break, they’ve got the very simple task of drawing an analytical self portrait. This is part of the example I’m giving to them. In class, we discuss using 3 dimensional shapes to construct the overall head shape. We then use guidelines for the features and wrap them around the forms to create the feeling of depth. Analyzing the features and relating the placement to our knowledge of proportion, they carefully describe the eyes, nose, mouth and brow using only line. The only light and shadow used at this point is to describe the relationship of light on the pupil and iris.
Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-77199216081066860562014-02-09T15:24:00.001-08:002014-02-09T15:24:40.468-08:00Retirement
A friend of ours is retiring. Here’s my suggestions for him so he doesn’t get bored or drive his wife crazy.

Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-84993622716910235342014-01-16T18:44:00.001-08:002014-01-16T18:44:12.679-08:00In the Kitchen with Daddy

I’m in the middle of this piece and kind of got excited about it. Only because I made a new brush in Photoshop and I absolutely LOVE it. I’ve been messing with different brushes and textures constantly and although the experimentation is fun, I haven’t found a brush that felt like an extension of my hand, until now.

I also tried out something new- I used a canvas texture to give it a more painterly feel, which I also absolutely love.

This piece is based on my husband and daughter and the time they spend together. Thankfully, I married an AMAZING chef. One of his joys in life is cooking delicious meals for the people that he loves. Better yet, when the kids want to help out, he can share his passion for cooking with them and it becomes a learning opportunity.

In fact, he’s in the kitchen right now baking me some double chocolate chip cake. Yuummmmm.

So now that I’ve shared this, it’s back to painting.

Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-27421253757935894702014-01-15T17:50:00.001-08:002014-01-15T17:50:47.583-08:00Paws To Read: Orange Public Library Artwork

Rough “thumbnail” Sketch

Cleaned Line Drawing

Detail

Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-57151901953500209612014-01-05T22:44:00.001-08:002015-11-08T17:19:07.972-08:00Working hard at it
I’ve been using my Bamboo tablet with Photoshop CS 2 (yes, I said CS2, don’t laugh at me!) almost every day for the last 3 weeks during the holiday break. Along with my constant absorption of good art and illustration on the web, in my local library and the LCAD library, I have been supplying my noggin with ample inspiration. Drawing whilst listening to various inspirational podcasts, youtube artist interviews, and really great ambient music, I’ve discovered the magic key to breaking my ADD and keeping myself at the computer. I’ve also finally broken free from the fear I’ve had for years of doing a “bad drawing”, even though I’ve been taught this in college to not fear bad drawings.—It’s inevitable--- Brandishing a pen and sketchbook every moment I can and not minding my major anti-social behavior in pursuit of the goal of a “bad drawing”, has brought me to a very happy stage in my life where I’m finally able to produce work of a caliber that makes me happy! The drawings are things that I want to draw, and not for the wants of anyone else. I’m not drawing to make anyone happy but myself, and I’m finally getting there… I’m finally doing it… I’m near the point where I know I can produce something extraordinary. I can feel it. It’s coming together. Now… to get busy and paint.Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-20223585002298411572013-10-28T22:49:00.001-07:002013-10-28T22:49:33.282-07:00The Flies & the Honey Pot

A jar of honey chanced to spill its contents on the windowsill in many a viscous pool and rill.

The flies, attracted by the sweet, began so greedily to eat, they smeared their fragile wings and feet.

With many a twitch and pull in vain they gasped to get away again, and died in aromatic pain.

Moral: O foolish creatures that destroy themselves for transitory joy.

-Aesop

<img title="Flies And Honey Pot flat" style="border-top: 0px; She went hiking today and found a really cool snail shell. She wanted to keep it so she cleaned it out and kept it in a special little “geocache” box.

I used Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop for this little drawing. I started sketching the snail and then began ‘carving’ away at the lines with a hard eraser tool. I liked how it reminded me of the way a printed linoleum cut piece would look so I kind of just kept developing the drawing that way.

Just a fun little exploration.

Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36848144.post-6510048083810670492013-10-05T23:00:00.001-07:002013-10-05T23:00:24.021-07:00So it’s October….

And it’s time for my favorite season--- eating season. I’ll eventually be the size of an elephant come December, since it seems every holiday from October until December involves eating yummy food, and I always have a lack of will power. Hopefully my new habit of eating vegetarian and avoiding sugar will help me to curb the annual weight gain that usually starts about now, and culminates at Christmas time with my Filipino family and a ridiculous consumption of Adobo and Guinitan.

Happy beginning of the holiday season everyone… Have fun celebrating!

Except for Columbus day. We all know that should not be a holiday, people.

Don’t get me started.
Larissa Marantzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09625613398967462496noreply@blogger.com0
